Merino wool has long been heralded as nature's best temperature-regulating fabric. With the ability to hold onto heat in cold temps, manage moisture in humidity or during strenuous activity, and dry quickly in any type of wet environment, there's no doubt as to why we choose merino wool for one of our most important layers: the foundation. For chilly backpacking, mountaineering, or skiing trips, and for humid hiking, paddling, and climbing excursions, the Alpine Onset Collection are the base layers you need to keep your temperature in check. Using 83% merino wool with a touch of nylon and spandex for extra mobility, each Alpine Onset piece features a trim fit as your next-to-skin layer for easy layering and efficient temperature control. A flat seam construction prevents chafing, and a lightweight, compact design makes it easy to fit an extra layer or two in your pack. Plus, merino wool naturally blocks odors - making it an easy winner that both you and your tentmate will appreciate.

RATING AND REVIEWS

Keeping me cozy through Seattle Snowpocalypse

5

I loved my Alpine Onsets so much that I had to buy a second pair. I wear them night skiing at Snoqualmie and on backcountry tours pretty much every weekend. I think they're sturdy baselayers; they breathe well; I like the colors; I like the fit (I'm 5'1" with thunder thighs or you could say curvy, like a normal person.) Looking forward to taking these out on all of my upcoming ski trips. Also, bonus: they're seeing me through the Seattle Snowpocalypse.

I WANT to love them

These pants are on the right track, but not quite perfect. The fabric is awesome - soft, warm, and feels pretty durable for merino, They seem well-engineered, too: seams in the right non-irritating places and an ergonomic fit that doesn't feel too tight or bunchy anywhere. Despite the things I like, I find myself not wearing these pants as much as I anticipated because I HATE the waistband. I really like the higher rise, but I wish it were a different sort of design (like a wide self-fabric yoga style waistband or a sewn-on elastic like the men's version). As it is, the elastic folds and crumples inside its fabric sheath as I move and sweat, and I end up being distracted and annoyed by how uncomfortable it becomes as it's wadded up under my other clothes. It's a real bummer, because literally everything else about these pants feels really well thought out.

Comfortable, though a tad long

Great weight to wear under everything. My only gripe with OR products is that they don't provide petite sizing so everything ends up being too long for my 5'1" size. But as I've done since forever, I roll them up and enjoy the many pros.

Super comfy, perfect weight

These base layer bottoms are super comfortable for long ski tours in any type of weather from right around freezing to arctic. I think they are the perfect weight (not too heavy that they make you sweat, but not too light that they don't insulate). I appreciate that they're not skin tight like some base layer bottoms, but the waist fits perfectly (I have an athletic built with muscular thighs and a smaller waist). I also love that the cuffs don't cinch... it makes it way more comfortable for rolling them up above the calves (so they don't get in the way of ski boots) without cutting off the circulation of my rather large calves. Thank OR!

I've been wanting a Merino base later for a while and I'm glad I invested in these. Perfect for hiking and snow sports. The waistband is very comfortable...like your favorite pair of yoga pants!

I purchased these pants just before heading on a ice climbing/backcountry ski trip. These were a go-to layer for me! I wore these every single day and never suffered from being cold.

I got these to wear under snow pants for my outdoor job, where I ski and snowshoe on a daily basis in the winter. I need a good set of merino base layer pants, and I am happy with these overall. Haven't tested them in the field yet, but I have no doubts they'll do a great job. My only complaint is just a personal preference issue. The sizing is fine, but the elastic fits a little too high on my waist. Almost up to my belly button. I'm concerned this is a wedgie in the making while I cross country ski. Maybe not. But overall I'm happy with these.
