Merino wool has long been heralded as nature's best temperature-regulating fabric. With the ability to hold onto heat in cold temps, manage moisture in humidity or during strenuous activity, and dry quickly in any type of wet environment, there's no doubt as to why we choose merino wool for one of our most important layers: the foundation. For chilly backpacking, mountaineering, or skiing trips, and for humid hiking, paddling, and climbing excursions, the Alpine Onset Collection are the base layers you need to keep your temperature in check. Using 83% merino wool with a touch of nylon and spandex for extra mobility, each Alpine Onset piece features a trim fit as your next-to-skin layer for easy layering and efficient temperature control. A flat seam construction prevents chafing, and a lightweight, compact design makes it easy to fit an extra layer or two in your pack. Plus, merino wool naturally blocks odors - making it an easy winner that both you and your tentmate will appreciate.

I got these to wear under snow pants for my outdoor job, where I ski and snowshoe on a daily basis in the winter. I need a good set of merino base layer pants, and I am happy with these overall. Haven't tested them in the field yet, but I have no doubts they'll do a great job. My only complaint is just a personal preference issue. The sizing is fine, but the elastic fits a little too high on my waist. Almost up to my belly button. I'm concerned this is a wedgie in the making while I cross country ski. Maybe not. But overall I'm happy with these.

Not a perfect fit

I found the waistband too tight on these pants. The rest of the pants were a little bit baggy, but the waist was too tight to be comfortable. I'm hoping the elastic will stretch over time, but it's not the first time I've noticed this trend in OR clothing. Once you get into the bigger sizes, the way they scale up doesn't seem to match my body or those of my friends who tried them on.

Super warm and comfortable, without being bulky.

I work as a fish biologist in Northern Alaska. To do this, I need long underwear that is warm, without being too bulky or limiting my mobility. These are perfect! On extremely cold days I will layer 2 at a time, keeping me cozy while still allowingn me to move around with ease

Soft, warm, and slim

These bottoms are so cozy! They fit me like a glove (I got Small, 5'8" 120lb), and they work well under any of my pants. I wear these around town, and as far as technical performance, I've worn them on fall hikes and climbing trips, and I look forward to trying them snowshoeing here pretty soon. They seem durable, no noticeable scuffs or marks from being under my climbing pants (Kickstep Roll-Up by OR) scraped on rocks. They don't add any bulk or discomfort in my harness--if anything they make that cozier, too! They're long enough to tuck into most hiking boot height socks, and they keep my ankles a bit warmer in climbing shoes. I bought two pairs, and I alternate them daily now that the temps are cooler. My only warning is that the seams run across the top of your leg, so in some thinner pants they show as a small lump--not something I'm concerned about in most settings. While they are not odorless, switching off every other day gets me through a whole week without needing to wash them. I may buy another pair in a few months if these continue to be this awesome!

Nice product but fit was not right

I liked these but the waist was too small and the leg portion was way too big. I returned them.
