This is a high quality lightweight warm jacket. I gave it four stars instead of five because it doesn't have a two-way zipper.

I live in the Pacific Northwest and do a lot of bicycle touring in the mountains. I was looking for a jacket that would keep me warm during our moderate but damp winters and that would function in camp in the evenings during three-season camping. The jacket had to be packable, somewhat water resistant and have a hood. I am cold all the time and being able to cover my head without searching for a hat really helps.

This jacket fits the bill nicely. It packs down to a reasonable size in its own pocket (no extra bags to keep track of), has hand and gear pockets and is super light. Most important, it does the job and keeps me comfy in the conditions I bought it for. It appears to be durable and high quality, although there have been a few down pokes through the Pertex fabric.

I would love to see this jacket offered with a two-way zipper. Wearing it around town, in camp and on the bike it would be nice to be able to unzip from the bottom either for freedom of movement or to access my pants pockets. The sleeves are nice and long, which allows the wearer to be active and stay covered.

I did a lot of thinking and reading between the lines of the various jacket descriptions in deciding what size to buy. I ended up getting the medium and it was the right choice for me. I am 5'6" 135 pounds and have an hourglass figure. (Yes, outdoor industry it is possible to be a fit woman and actually have hips!) This jacket is billed as a "slim fit" and that is indeed how it fits. I am usually a small in OR and most other brands. I went to the medium because I knew I wanted more of a streetwear fit. The small would have worked as well but it would have been a true slim fit. The medium works on me as a streetwear fit. In other words I can wear a layer under it and it still fits, but the jacket is not so bulky I couldn't put a shell over it. The jacket has some shaping to it, which is nice. However, I think it is designed for an "athletic" build as opposed to an "hourglass" so it is a little loose up top and a little tight at the hips. But nothing ridiculous, it fits and is quite wearable.

I came on the website looking for a thicker down jacket and was disappointed to discover that this hoody, which has many features I enjoy - nice deep hood, fairly durable for how lightweight it is, stuffs into the pocket, etc - now comes in only girly colors. I think mine, which I bought last year, came in "flame." Now the options are basically pink, purple, blue, and black with nice girly liner blue. If I'm on a solo trip setting up camp in freezing rain after a day of burly bushwhacking through the woods, or out at midnight to give hungry sled dogs a snack in -30 degree weather, I'd like to at least have the option of wearing a color that doesn't announce from a mile away that I'm a female outdoor guide who's too short to buy men's gear like many of the other female outdoor guides.

On a similar note, I've noticed that the OR products have increasingly begun to demonstrate a characteristic of women's clothing that is commonly a problem for me - the cut of the arms is too small for my shoulder and arm muscles.

To sum up, OR makes great, thoughtful, durable gear, but there is a reason that many of my taller female friends who are outdoor guides end up shopping in the men's section. I wish that there were more companies out there who made durable gear that works for women of my stature, and comes in colors other than pink and purple.

Comments about OR Women's Sonata Hooded Down Jacket:

I went cross country skiing and snow shoeing in Montana in below freezing temperatures. I rocked some smart wool layers and the sonata jacket and I was surprisingly great! Super light weight and fits very well. I'm 4"11 123 weight and I bought a small. It's a great jacket for working out and moving fast and if you get to warm it packs down inside your inner pocket! Love it!

Comments about OR Women's Sonata Hooded Down Jacket:

I love how easy it is to travel with this jacket. I wear it skiing mostly, and when it gets to hot, I can squish it down in my hydration back pack. I wish there were more colour options that weren't so "feminine," like a deep green, or rust, or brown. Otherwise, amazing all around jacket!

Comments about OR Women's Sonata Hooded Down Jacket:

This jacket is really cute, great cut for an athletic cut. I'm 5'4, 140lbs and a MED fits me perfectly in all OR jackets. I wish this jacket came in an all black option but I get compliments on it when I wear it. It's definitely made for chilly weather and the hood is so comfy. My only complaint is the amount of feathers that come out of it. If I'm wearing my black light jacket under it, it's got feathers all over it afterwards.

This is a great coat. It is very warm, comfortable to wear, and looks great too. It has quickly become my go to for everything from the backcountry to watching the kids soccer games on the cold metal bleachers.

I have been wearing this coat for 2 winters now. The pertex has worn out/off but that's my only complaint. The hood fits perfect, it is light and has held up to wear and tear well.

Comments about OR Women's Sonata Hooded Down Jacket:

I love this down jacket. It keeps me toasty and it is lightweight enough to carry on all winter adventures. A must have type of layer. The pockets are excellent, it is so nice to have multiple pockets in thoughtful places, especially, the small chest zip pockets, the interior pockets & the stuff into itself pocket for hanging on my harness when I am not carrying a pack ice climbing. The colors are terrific, I love the variety of colors to choose from. Thanks!!

I biked all winter in this jacket and coupled with a merino wool base layer it was warm enough. My rating is 4 stars because the down shows through the fabric in the colour I ordered (scarlet/flame colour).

Comments about OR Women's Sonata Hooded Down Jacket:

When I was shopping for a new puffy layer OR had a lot of options. I decided on the Sonata, and I am so glad I did. This layer is a great layer to keep in your pack for just in case the temp drops suddenly during your day climbing, skiing or hiking. It is also great on those winter days hiking or skiing when you need wind protection as well as warmth. I wore this jacket on an all day hike to Muir in February. The weather started out great, but as soon as we got up higher the wind picked up and snow was blowing around. This jacket kept me warm, dry and comfortable in the not so great weather conditions.
I do with the jacket had the double zipper and a hood adjuster, but I can live without those.
I love this jacket, i can't seem to take it off. Its great for any adventure from bike commuting to winter mountaineering and everything in between.
If your looking for a great mid-weight puffy layer, this is your go to down option. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
