Merino wool has long been heralded as nature's best temperature-regulating fabric. With the ability to hold onto heat in cold temps, manage moisture in humidity or during strenuous activity, and dry quickly in any type of wet environment, there's no doubt as to why we choose merino wool for one of our most important layers: the foundation. For chilly backpacking, mountaineering, or skiing trips, and for humid hiking, paddling, and climbing excursions, the Alpine Onset Collection are the base layers you need to keep your temperature in check. Using 83% merino wool with a touch of nylon and spandex for extra mobility, each Alpine Onset piece features a trim fit as your next-to-skin layer for easy layering and efficient temperature control. A flat seam construction prevents chafing, and a lightweight, compact design makes it easy to fit an extra layer or two in your pack. Plus, merino wool naturally blocks odors - making it an easy winner that both you and your tentmate will appreciate.

RATING AND REVIEWS

Lightweight

5

Great lightweight base, feels soft and keeps its size when washed.

Luxurious Comfort

Wear as a base layer or by itself. Love the length - linger to the h but not swimming in the sleeves. Adapts to warm and cold

Light and warm

This wool shirt is warm without being at all bulky. It is as warm as merino wool products from other manufacturers but not as thick. I wear it skate skiing with just a vest. I was worried that my arms might get cold, but it seems to be dense enough to block the wind. The neck can seem a little tight so I usually unzip it a little once I am warmed up. I also wear it to run in freezing temps and under a down jacket for less aerobic activities.

Nearly perfect base layer top

4

Really nice base layer! Comfy, well-made. Fits well. The only thing that kept me from giving it 5 stars was the lack of thumbholes.

Perfect

I was afraid this might be too light for winter cross country skiing, but it has worked perfectly. I skied in 0-10 degree weather with multiple layers but this was my base and it felt great, also was great as the day warmed,

Perfect for multiday use

5

I ski patrol in this shirt five days a week. From slogging through wind drifts while accessing hike-to terrain at 6am on avalanche control mornings to that freezing, dark last chair of the day, this shirt has me covered. I'm warm when I need it, can breathe when I'm sweaty, and I can remove my jackets at the end of the day and not smell like death. It seems great on durability so far, wearing it a lot!... though let's see by the end of the season what I think! It runs large. I am 5'5'' 130 lbs and the small is good though a bit long in the torso perhaps.

Great top!

I use this while I teach skiing and it will also be good for summer use while hiking, biking on cooler days. It is lightweight but warm so don't mind keeping in my day pack for extra warmth if I need it,

Can't Stop Wearing It!

Tried this top on and didn't take it off for two weeks (and it still didn't smell after 2 weeks, can you believe it???)! This layer is so comfortable—it's warm when you need it without bringing on that panicky hot feeling when exercising. It fits well and is a key staple to my layering system this fall/winter. This is a very well-made product.
