CLIMB

Monserrat humbly eschews the word “pro” for herself, saying she simply loves to climb and share her love of climbing with others. Born in Ventura, Calif., by way of Mexico, she grew up in Raleigh, N.C. and began climbing while working as an outdoor educator. It was in Colorado that she began building a richer community through Brown Girls Climb.

For Monserrat, climbing is a dance with her body and mind that allows her to be fully present. Her relationship to the rocks is sacred as she builds her own relationship with the Earth. Yet, she explains, climbing is very much about collective memory—as she spends much of her time sharing the experience of climbing with her communities. Climbing is a tool for her personal healing and the place where she feels the most whole. When Monserrat isn’t climbing or working in the outdoor industry, she’s spending time with her Calpulli, learning her ancestral language, dancing and growing. And most recently, raising two chicks and three ducklings on her urban homestead in south Boulder.

Accomplishments

On December 30, 2018, Monserrat summited Iztaccihuatl with her best friend and climbing partner Ariana. She can recall that day like it was yesterday. Her first camping experience, when she was 5 years old, was marked by the first time she laid eyes on this sacred volcano. As a child visiting her Abuelita in Mexico City, she heard creation stories of these sacred volcanos and fell completely in love. Her father, uncle, and other men in her family had summited Iztaccihuatl and/or Popocatepetl, the neighboring volcano that is now active. On that day, She became the first woman in her family to summit. She hopes to return Home soon and take her cousins up and share her love for that volcano.

Passion Project

Monserrat didn’t grow up exposed to the sport like most climbers, mostly due to barriers that exist for her communities. Because of that experience, she pours a lot of love into organizations that work to change that. She is part of the founding team of Brown Girls Climb, a part-time instructor at Women’s WIlderness, and a volunteer with Latino Outdoors. Whether she is working with Spanish-speaking families at the gym or training with local women for their Single Pitch Instructor exams, building community through climbing is her passion. At the root of her involvement with these organizations is the desire to weave communities across barriers in order for them to build their own unique relationship to climbing and the outdoors.
