Down vs. Synthetic

Not sure which insulation you need?

There are two kinds of insulation: down vs synthetic. Which one fits depends on how wet, how cold, and how active you'll be.

Feature Down Synthetic
Warmth-to-weight Excellent warmth for minimal weight. Very good warmth with slightly more weight.
Packability Highly compressible and easy to pack. Compressible, but typically takes up more space.
Wet conditions Can lose insulating ability when wet. Maintains insulation better when wet.
Drying time Typically takes longer to dry when saturated. Dries faster and performs well in damp conditions.
Breathability Excellent warmth without excessive bulk. Good breathability with reliable warmth.
Durability Long-lasting with proper care. Durable and well suited to frequent use.
Best for Cold, dry conditions and lightweight warmth. Wet, variable conditions and high-output activities.

How to Care for Your Insulated Gear

How do you wash a down jacket?

Wash down gear to remove dirt and restore loft. Use a front-loading washer or a top-loader without an agitator, and choose a down-specific cleaner like Nikwax Down Wash Direct. Follow your garment's care label, rinse thoroughly, and tumble dry on low until completely dry, breaking up clumps between cycles as needed.

How do you wash synthetic insulated gear?

Synthetic insulation can be cleaned using the same guidelines as hard- and soft-shell outerwear. We recommend Nikwax Tech Wash and following the instructions on your garment’s care label and the cleaning product. Avoid conventional laundry detergents.

Does washing damage down insulation?

No. Proper washing can actually restore down’s loft and insulating performance. Use a front-loading washer, a down-specific cleaner, and tumble dry on low until completely dry. Avoid top-loading machines with agitators, which can damage internal baffles.

How do you restore loft to a down jacket?

Tumble drying on low heat with clean dryer balls, if permitted by the care label, can help restore loft. Allow the jacket to dry completely before storing.

Do you need to reapply a water-repellent treatment after washing?

Not necessarily. Cleaning can help revitalize the garment’s existing durable water repellent (DWR) finish. If water no longer beads on the outer fabric after cleaning, an appropriate aftercare treatment may be needed. For down gear, we recommend Nikwax Down Proof.

How often should you wash insulated gear?

Wash your gear as needed based on use and buildup of dirt, sweat, and oils. Regular cleaning helps maintain insulation performance and extend the life of your garment. Follow the care label and recommended aftercare product instructions.
