Men’s Outdoor Jackets and Coats

Outdoor Research men’s outdoor jackets and coats are built for every season: rain shells, insulated jackets, fleece, and ski-ready hardshells.

Men’s Jacket Types

Every jacket type in the men’s line has a job. Men’s Rain Jackets carry the waterproof 3-layer Foray 3L, a customer favorite worn for hiking, travel, and storm days. Men’s Windbreakers block wind at the lowest weight for high-output days. Men’s Soft Shell Jackets, led by the Ferrosi, trade full weather protection for stretch and breathability, while Men’s Hard Shell Jackets hold the line in sustained wet and wind. Men’s Fleece covers everyday and midlayer warmth, and Men’s Down and Insulated Jackets span packable Helium down and SuperStrand synthetic insulation for real cold. Men’s Ski Jackets run from the resort-ready Powderverse to the GORE-TEX 3L Headwall, and Men’s Vests keep your core warm when your arms need to move.

Men’s Outdoor Coats

If you search for an outdoor coat rather than a jacket, the warmest end of this range is where to look: insulated jackets sized to layer over a midlayer, and longer winter-weight styles that extend coverage for cold, static days. Men’s outdoor coats here follow the same rule as the jackets: the product page states the insulation type, the warmth level, and whether the shell is waterproof or weather-resistant.

FAQs

How do I choose an outdoor jacket?

Start with the conditions you are dressing for. Rain calls for a waterproof shell, windy high-output days suit a softshell or windbreaker, and cold calls for down or synthetic insulation. For variable days, combine them: an insulated jacket or fleece under a shell covers most winter conditions. The type collections above group the line the same way.

What is the difference between a hardshell and softshell jacket?

A hardshell is a weather-protection layer: a waterproof, windproof membrane built for sustained rain and storm conditions. A softshell like the Ferrosi trades that full protection for stretch, breathability, and comfort in motion, which makes it the better choice for dry, windy, high-output days. Many hikers own one of each and choose by forecast.

What jacket is best for cold weather?

For dry cold, down insulation like the Helium line gives the most warmth for its weight. For damp cold, SuperStrand synthetic insulation keeps insulating when wet. The deepest warmth comes from the longer winter-weight insulated styles, and each product page lists its insulation type and warmth level so you can match the jacket to the temperatures you expect.

When should I choose a vest instead of a jacket?

Choose a vest when your core needs warmth but your arms need full freedom of movement: aerobic days, layering under a shell, or shoulder-season conditions that do not justify a full jacket. A vest also packs smaller and vents better, which makes it the piece most likely to stay in the pack year-round. The Men’s Vests collection carries the range.
